Where are Americans traveling this summer?

Summer is coming, and for many Americans, that means the summer trips booked long ago (or not that long ago) are approaching. So where are people going this year?

Looking at itineraries departing on or after May 24 and returning on or before September 3 (booked via channels offering Allianz insurance, which is to say quite a few of them), Allianz Global Assistance found Cancun to be the most-booked international summer destination among Americans for the third year in a row. But in a change, London and Paris seem to have fallen in popularity, with all ten of the top international destinations located in either Mexico or the Caribbean:

On the domestic side, the Allianz study found that Orlando is once again expected to lead the way this summer. More than 7% of domestic summer travel bookings will take U.S. travelers to the home of Disney, with New York in second place for the second year in a row.

“Americans are staying closer to home this summer, with all top 10 international destinations in the Caribbean and Mexico for the first time,” said Daniel Durazo, director of communications at Allianz Global Assistance USA. “Summer means shoulder season in much of the Caribbean and Mexico, so deals and discounts make it a great time to visit our tropical neighbors. With hurricane season beginning in June, it’s especially important to consider travel insurance for your summer vacations. Remember that once a storm or hurricane has been named, it’s too late to get hurricane coverage, so it’s important to buy travel insurance when booking your trip.”
