Today is World Backup Day. You’re right, it does seem like there’s a day for everything! I’m still waiting for Johnny Jet Appreciation Day but that’s not gonna happen – not even in my own house!

In the meantime, as silly as these acknowledgments are, some of them do serve some good, although I’m not so sure about Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, which doesn’t seem to do my waistline any good. But brands and retailers are taking advantage of World Backup Day by offering some incredible deals.

Why is this important for travelers? Well, if you take a lot of photos or videos when you travel and are constantly running out of room on your laptop, computer, camera or phone, then today serves as a great reminder to do something about it. Even if you aren’t running out of space, it’s still a good idea to keep a couple of external hard drives on hand, just in case your device crashes, gets stolen, you lose it, it crashes or God forbid, there’s a fire. That’s why I have multiple external hard drives that are password protected in homes in different countries (friends are happy to store a small external hard drive somewhere.)

If you’re asking why don’t I just use the Cloud, it’s because I don’t want to put my personal photos up there since it’s easier to get hacked, I don’t want to rely on third-party company servers and … it’s expensive.

I have a variety of brands of external hard drives but most of them are WD thanks to the company sending me some to test out over the years. They haven’t let me down, which is why I keep recommending them.

My latest one is WD 2TB My Passport. It’s currently on sale on Amazon and what I love about them is that 2TB is more than enough to hold every photo and video I’ve ever taken, yet it’s small enough to keep in my carry-on bag. It’s only ‎4.22 x 2.95 x 0.44 inches and weighs just 4.2 ounces. Check out more WD external hard drives here.

There are even smaller and lighter ones available as well so find what’s best for you and most importantly safeguard your travel memories. This SAMSUNG T7 Touch Portable SSD 1TB is currently on sale for $50 off while the Seagate portable 2TB hard drive is 40% off today. Check out more external hard drive options here.

Nice article. I lost months of photos once. Then I learned the 3-2-1 backup rule…..

The 3-2-1 backup strategy is made up of three rules, they are as follows:
Three copies of data- This includes the original data and at least two backups.
Two different storage types- Both copies of the backed up data should be kept on two separate storage types to minimize the chance of failure. Storage types could include an internal hard drive, external hard drive, removable storage drive or cloud backup environment.
One copy offsite- At least one data copy should be stored in an offsite or remote location to ensure that natural or geographical disasters cannot affect all data copies.
