Ever wanted to stand on the wing of a plane while it’s flying through the air? Me neither. But surprisingly, there are a lot of adventure junkies who want to do this. It looks like they don’t allow it (“wingwalking”) in the U.S. anymore (there used to be a place in the state of Washington that did it), so the only place in the world where you can do it, as far as I can tell, is England. With Wingwalk Displays, there are two options:
- Chiltern Air Park, Ipsden, Wallingford, OX10 6AS
- Breighton Aerodrome, Selby, Yorkshire, YO8 6DS
The company operates from May to the end of September and uses a 1940s Boeing Stearman Biplane to fly its wingwalkers. The intense experience lasts about 10 minutes and includes a variety of flybys and maneuvers, with the highlights being a dive from 500 feet and a zoom climb with a final “run and break” before landing. Participants must be 16 years of age and weigh under 77kg (177lbs). If you’re older than 65, you’ll require a doctor’s signature confirming your fitness to participate. Wingwalking with Wingwalk Displays costs £399 ($529 USD).
