A trapped pod of orcas, commonly known as killer whales, is attracting a lot of media attention today. The whales are trapped in a small ice hole in Canada’s Hudson Bay, about an hour’s snowmobile ride from Inukjuak, Quebec. The Canadian government is sending scientists to assess the situation and to see whether or not the orcas can be saved, but there is growing public demand for intervention. The community of Inukjuak has mixed feelings, as killer whales hunt seals, an animal that is important to the local economy.

Out of curiosity… how do a group of whales get stuck? How did they get there to begin with? This is quite interesting…. I guess this must happen to a lot of animals (like the video suggested) but it’s surprising to see. You’d think they would just be able to swim out to another area that isn’t covered in ice unless the ice just suddenly freezes overnight and there was no way out. Baffling. Thanks for the video!
