Don’t Need a Bellman/Porter? Just Say “No, Thank You”
These days, most travelers seem to understand the benefits of packing light (traveling with only a carry-on saves money and time and also allows you to use public transportation much more easily). But even with my light, small bags I still get pressured at hotels and foreign airports to use a porter. Unless I’m staying at a swanky, luxury hotel, I always politely decline, even when they grab my bags from the trunk of the taxi or my hand. Your bags are safer with you—and of course, you don’t have to spend money on a tip.
FYI: The shirtless bellman above is helping me at the Manava Suite Resort Tahiti, where I stayed a few years back.
