This is around the time when many North Americans start planning, or dreaming of their already-planned, summer vacations. No doubt, many will go on a river cruise since it’s the fastest-growing segment of the travel industry.

Before I had gone on a river cruise, I harbored two major misconceptions: I thought they were only for older folks and I thought I would be really bored. Now, having traveled on many river cruises (over half a dozen in the last three years), I realize how wrong I was. I was never bored and this increasingly popular way of traveling is attracting a broader demographic of travelers.

There are lots of reasons to love river cruising but here are some of the first things that come to mind: I love that you don’t get seasick, you don’t have to worry about sinking, you don’t need to take any tenders to shore, you can walk from the ship to town, excursions are included, they offer free WiFi, you get to taste local food, have incredible views from your stateroom, and you see a lot of places without having to pack and unpack.

Last year, my wife and I went on an AmaWaterways European river cruise on their Black Sea Voyage, a Lower Danube cruise (recently renamed Gems of Southeast Europe). We chose this cruise since we’d already sailed the Upper Danube and we wanted to visit new countries. It was quite the experience as we visited five countries in eight days, and three of them, we had never been to before. Here’s my story.

AmaWaterways is known as an upscale river cruise line with 21 custom-designed ships. The line sails to more than 25 countries in Africa, Asia and Europe and they just created this infographic (see below) with 10 fun facts that you didn’t know about Europe.
