Last week, Austrian Airlines introduced a 3-D seat map feature. Instead of simply scrolling over a 2-D image of the plane, potential flyers on Austrian Airlines routes flown by Boeing 777s can now see their seats in 3-D before booking them on the Austrian Airlines website. See the image above for a better sense of what that means. The move comes after Austrian’s Star Alliance partner United began offering a 3-D seat map on its website for flyers on its CRJ-550s.
Overall, this is great news for consumers. It seems that more and more airlines will be offering 3-D seat maps, which of course will make it easier for flyers to choose which seats are best for them. The 3-D seat map trend could even make sites like SeatGuru obsolete unless they step up their games.

Unfortunately, I cannot access the seating for Austrian Airlines. I bought tickets several months ago and told I could only select seats once we arrive at the airport. Never had this issue with anybody else and I have been flying since 1968! TERRIBLE policy!
