Best Capital One Credit Cards for Travel 2019

You will qualify for the best travel credit cards from Capital One if you have “excellent credit.” Capital One defines excellent credit as never declaring bankruptcy, not being at least 60 days late on any credit account in the past year, and having a loan or credit card with a minimum $5,000 limit for at least 5 years.

Your approval odds are best when you have a minimum 740 credit score, but others report getting approved with a low 700s credit score albeit with a lower credit limit. If you don’t have excellent credit yet, Capital One offers other instant approval credit cards, some of which don’t charge an annual fee or foreign transaction fee.

Best Capital One Travel Cards: Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

The Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card is Capital One’s flagship miles credit card. You earn unlimited 2x rewards miles for every dollar spent. Through January 2020, you earn 10x miles on all Hotels.com purchases.

Your point redemption options include travel statement credits and booking award flights. You will have a lot of flexibility when redeeming your points for travel statement credits without a redemption minimum and booking award flights without blackout dates.

A “new for 2019” redemption option is the Capital One airline transfer partners including Emirates, Singapore Airlines, and Air France/KLM. Most of the transfer partners have a 2 Venture miles to 1.5 airline miles which aren’t the best transfer ratio compared to Chase or American Express, but it can be a better redemption option when booking international flights.

New cardmembers can spend $3,000 in the first 3 months to receive a signup bonus of 50,000 bonus miles worth $500. Capital One also waives the $95 annual fee for the first year.

Another travel benefit you might enjoy includes a $100 application fee credit for your Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application.

Lifestyle Rewards: Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card

A newer trend for rewards credit cards is earning bonus points on lifestyle purchases. The Capital One Savor offers unlimited tiered rewards on the following purchases:

  • 8% back on tickets at Vivid Seats (through May 2020)
  • 4% back on dining and entertainment
  • 2% back on groceries
  • 1% back on all remaining purchases

Through December 2019, Capital One also covers your Postmates Unlimited monthly membership fee. This perk saves you $9.99 monthly plus delivery fees with each Postmates order larger than $15.

The current new cardmember offer is $300 bonus cash after spending $3,000 in the first 3 months. And Capital One waives the $95 annual fee for your first year.

You can redeem your rewards points for cash back in any amount with the Capital One® Savor® Cash Rewards Credit Card.

Cash Rewards: Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card

For flat rate cash rewards, the Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card is one of the best cash back credit card options available. You earn unlimited 1.5% cash back on each purchase. This is the standard rate for the best cash back credit cards. What helps distinguish the Quicksilver from other no annual fee credit cards is you won’t pay a foreign transaction fee.

You earn a $150 cash bonus after spending $500 in the first 3 months. Capital One lets you redeem your cash rewards in any award amount.

It’s possible to get more value from the Capital One Venture if you travel on a regular basis. But if you prefer the flexibility of cash rewards or want to avoid paying an annual fee, the Quicksilver makes it easy to maximize your spending power.

Building Credit: Capital One Platinum Credit Card

When you have a low credit score, it can seem like most cards charge an annual fee. The Capital One® Platinum Credit Card doesn’t.

Although you won’t earn purchase rewards by owning the Capital One Platinum, it’s a free way to build credit by paying your balance in full every month.

If you have “average credit” with a credit score in the 600s or less than 3 years of credit history, you can pursue the unsecured Capital One Platinum. With an unsecured card, you won’t have a security deposit that secured credit cards require. After your first 5 monthly payments, Capital One will review your account and consider increasing your credit line. This can make it easier to improve your credit score by reducing your credit utilization ratio.

When you have no credit, need to rebuild your credit, or have a credit score below 600, the Capital One® Secured Mastercard® is a better fit. This version of the Platinum Mastercard that requires a refundable security deposit of $49, $99, and $200 and will get you an initial $200 credit line. After 5 months of timely payments, Capital One will consider increasing your credit line.
