American Express Gold Card

The American Express® Gold Card comes with plenty of perks that can help maximize your purchases, including some helpful Uber perks.

Uber Perks

American Express® Gold Card cardholders can also get up to $120 in Uber Cash annually. Plus, you’ll earn 4x Membership Rewards® points for each Uber Eats purchase on your card. To use this perk, simply add your card to your Uber account and you’ll automatically get $10 in Uber Cash each month in your Uber account for U.S. Uber Eats orders or U.S. Uber rides. Any unused Uber Cash expires at the end of each month (it does not roll over to the next month).

Cardholders also get up to 12 complimentary months of Eats Pass when you subscribe with your American Express Gold Card. That’s a value of up to $119 annually (based on the $9.99 monthly price over 12 months). With the Uber Eats Pass, you can get unlimited $0 Delivery Fees and 5% off orders over $15 at eligible restaurants. Note that taxes and service fees may apply and do not count toward the order minimum.

This benefit applies only in the U.S. on U.S. orders at eligible restaurants and on eligible restaurant purchases.

Additional American Express Gold Card Perks and Benefits

Cardholders earn 4x points at U.S. supermarkets (up to $25,000 per year in purchases, then 1x). They also earn unlimited 4x points at restaurants worldwide, including at deliveries and takeout, plus 4x points for Uber Eats purchases too. Cardholders earn 3x points on flights booked directly with airlines or on amextravel.com.

The American Express Gold Card also comes with dining perks. Additionally, cardholders can earn up to $10 in monthly statement credits (up to $120 in savings annually) when paying with their card at Grubhub, Seamless, Cheesecake Factory, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Boxed, and participating Shake Shack locations. Enrollment is required.

Arguably the best miles credit card for frequent flyers, The Platinum Card® from American Express gives you $200 in annual Uber credits.

You get $15 each month plus a $20 bonus in December ($35 total credit) for U.S.-based Uber rides. Other exciting Amex Platinum perks include:

Uber Credit Card

The Uber Credit Card may seem like a no-brainer for Uber and Uber Eats purchases, if you’re okay with earning Uber Cash. You earn up to 5% Uber Cash on purchases:

  • 5% back on Uber services (Uber, Uber Eats, and JUMP)
  • 3% back on hotels, airfare, and restaurants
  • 1% back on everything else

The Uber Credit Card doesn’t have an annual fee. You also get up to $600 in cell phone protection when you pay your mobile phone bill through the card. New cardholders can earn $100 in Uber Cash after spending $500 on purchases in the first 90 days.

Chase Sapphire Reserve

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® can be a good, flexible option for a number of reasons. For one, cardholders earn 3x points on dining worldwide, including eligible takeout and delivery services. They also earn 3x points on travel, immediately after earning their $300 annual travel credit. Gas station and grocery store purchases will also count towards earning the annual $300 travel credit, through Dec. 31, 2021.

Sapphire Reserve cardholders earn 10x points on Lyft rides, including bikes and scooters. Complimentary Lyft Pink Membership is also available when activated by March 21, 2022.

Additionally, through April 30, 2021, cardholders automatically earn 3x points per $1 spent at grocery stores, up to $1,000 per month. Cardholders can also earn up to $120 in statement credits on Peloton Digital and All-Access Memberships through December 31, 2021. 

This is in addition to the complimentary DoorDash DashPass subscription that lets cardholders get unlimited deliveries with a $0 delivery fee and reduced service fees. They also earn up to $120 in statement credits on DoorDash purchases ($60 in statement credits through 2020 and another $60 in statement credits through 2021).

Points are worth 50% more through April 30, 2021, when redeemed for statement credits against existing purchases in select, rotating categories with the Chase Pay Yourself Back feature. Points are also worth 50% more when redeemed through the Chase Dining hub in Ultimate Rewards, now through April 30, 2021.

New Chase Sapphire Reserve® cardmembers can earn 60,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening, worth $900 toward travel when redeemed through Chase Ultimate Rewards®. 

Chase Sapphire Preferred Card

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card earns 2x Ultimate Rewards on dining and travel purchases. However, two new benefits include no delivery fees for a minimum of one year on qualifying food purchases with a DoorDash DashPass subscription, over a $100 value (activate by December 31, 2021). Cardholders can also earn 5x points on Lyft rides through March 2022.

Your points are worth 1.25 cents each when booking award travel with Chase. You can also transfer them at a 1:1 ratio to airlines and hotels including United, Southwest Airlines, Singapore Airlines, and World of Hyatt.

In case you don’t know, Chase Ultimate Rewards points are some of the most valuable credit card points you can earn. They’re worth the most for booking award flights. However, they are also worth 1 cent each for cash and gift cards.

New Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card cardholders can earn 80,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening, worth $1,000 when you redeem through Chase Ultimate Rewards®. Plus, they can earn up to $50 in statement credits towards grocery store purchases within the first year of account opening.

Citi Premier

The Citi Premier® Card can be another exciting option if you desire flexible ways to earn and redeem points. Earn 3x ThankYou points on air travel, hotels, restaurants, hotels, and gas stations. Everything else earns 1x point per $1. Cardholders can enjoy $100 off a single hotel stay of $500 or more, excluding taxes and fees, through thankyou.com, once per calendar year.

You can also transfer points at a 1:1 ratio to many international airlines including Asia Miles, Emirates, and Singapore Airlines.

If you qualify for the Mastercard World Elite version of the Citi Premier, you can get a loyalty bonus for riding Lyft. Mastercard gives you a $10 Lyft credit once per month after 5 monthly rides.

American Express Green Card

The recently revamped American Express Green Card is another contending entry-level travel credit card:

  • Earn 3x Membership Rewards on eligible travel, rideshares, and dining (including takeout and delivery worldwide)
  • Earn 1x points for all remaining purchases

The Apple Card can be a good cash back option for Uber purchases. You get 3% cash at select merchants including Uber, Uber Eats, and Apple. All Apply Pay purchases earn 2% back which is a payment option for Lyft rides. Otherwise, you only earn 1% back on Lyft on other non-Apple Pay purchases.

This card lets you redeem your cash rewards balance daily. It’s a nice feature if you want a cashback card with no annual fee.

Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card makes earning rewards on all purchases easy. You get 2x miles for every $1 you spend. Then you can redeem your miles for travel statement credits, booking upcoming travel, or transfer miles to Capital One’s leading travel loyalty programs.

One fringe benefit includes Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee credit, up to $100.

Before the monthly bonus, you earn 2x Membership Rewards at US supermarkets (on the first $6,000 spent per year) and 1x points for everything else.

This card earns Membership Rewards you can pool with some of the other best American Express credit cards. This way, you can book award flights more often.

World of Hyatt Credit Card

To earn some of the most valuable hotel points, look no further than The World of Hyatt Credit Card. This is one of the best hotel credit cards to book free nights at swanky properties.

Local transit and rideshares earn 2x World of Hyatt points. Dining, flights booked directly from the airline, plus fitness club and gym memberships earn double Hyatt points too. With the card, you earn up to 9 Hyatt points per $1 spent on World of Hyatt purchases.

Besides getting bonus points on local transit, another exciting reason to consider this card is for the free anniversary night. This night is valid at any category 1-4 property and can be worth a lot more than the card’s $95 annual fee. You get a second free night each year after $15,000 in annual card purchases.

This card also gives you instant World of Hyatt Discoverist loyalty status. Member perks include waived resort fees, premium on-site internet, space-available room upgrades, and Pearl M Life rewards status.

There are two great options for Uber rides. If you primarily want to redeem your rewards for Uber Cash, the Uber Credit Card earns 5% back on Uber, Uber Eats, and JUMP purchases. All remaining purchases earn either 2% or 1% back.

Frequent flyers can benefit more from the Platinum Card from American Express. You get up to $200 in annual Uber ride credits. This benefit is easy to overlook as you also get $200 in airline fee credits, airport lounge access, and Global Entry or TSA PreCheck.

Ultimately, the best credit card for Uber is the one you use regularly for your daily spending. Even if you don’t earn the most rewards points, being able to easily redeem your rewards for maximum value can be the better deal.

Which credit card is best for Lyft?

Lyft currently doesn’t offer a co-brand credit card but the Chase Sapphire products do come with Lyft benefits through March 2022. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card earns 5x points on Lyft rides through March 2020.

Your next best option can be getting a Mastercard World Elite product like the Citi Premier® Card. After your first 5 Lyft rides in a month, Mastercard gives you a $10 Lyft credit.

Do Uber and Lyft take credit cards?

Yes, both Uber and Lyft accept credit card payments from the four major credit card issuers (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover). Select credit cards award between 2x and 5x points per $1 on Uber and Lyft purchases.

If your credit card offers bonus points for digital wallet payments (like Apple Pay), it’s possible to earn above the standard 1x point per $1 as well.
