Why We Like It

  • Flexible point redemption options
  • 1:1 Marriott Bonvoy point transfers
  • Automatic Gold Elite status
  • Up to 5x Membership Rewards® points on select flight and hotel purchases

Most people use The Platinum Card® from American Express for its many air travel benefits. However, this card also has two Marriott perks. They include automatic Gold Elite status (enrollment required) and 1:1 point transfers.

Prepaid hotels booked with American Express Travel earn unlimited 5x points. So, when paying for Marriott stays through AmexTravel.com, you earn 5 Membership Rewards points per $1 spent. Your points are usually worth more when redeemed for award flights instead of hotel nights. Using The Platinum Card from American Express gives you the flexibility of transferring points to your Bonvoy account to book award nights when needed.

Although you don’t get free anniversary nights or Marriott credit, the built-in Gold status and the ability to earn 5x points is a valuable tradeoff. One of the best metal credit cards available, this premium credit card packs plenty of rewards.

Another hotel benefit for cardholders is the ability to get $200 back in statement credits each year on prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts® or The Hotel Collection bookings with American Express Travel when paying with their Platinum Card®.
