Metal credit cards are more than a status symbol. In most cases, banks reserve “metal status” for their flagship products. The best metal credit cards are perfect for earning travel rewards, though, it’s possible to enjoy cash rewards by paying with metal too.

An increasing number of cards are becoming metal including the new Apple Card. It’s possible to get a metal credit card that doesn’t charge an annual fee and (of course!) earns valuable rewards. In most cases, you will need a good or excellent credit score of at least 700 to qualify for these metal credit cards.

Best Metal Credit Cards for Travel

Travel rewards cards are the most common card to be made of metal. They also happen to have to some of the best benefits and award travel redemption options as well.

Platinum Card from American Express

One of the most benefit-rich credit cards is The Platinum Card® from American Express. Although it has $550 annual fee (See rates & fees), it can be a delight for frequent flyers as some of the best benefits include earning 5x Membership Rewards points on flights, an annual $200 air travel credit, and access to several leading airport lounge networks.

Your Membership Rewards points can be most valuable when you transfer them to the 1:1 airline partners. Some of the partners include Delta, Aer Lingus, Emirates, and Singapore Airlines.

New Platinum Card from American Express cardmembers can earn 60,000 bonus Membership Rewards points after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening. This bonus can be worth at least $600 when booking award flights.

Chase Sapphire Reserve

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® is the flagship card of the Chase Ultimate Rewards program. It’s a premium travel rewards card that lets you enjoy free Priority Pass Select lounge access, Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, and a $300 travel credit. You also earn 3x points on travel and dining plus 1 point on all other purchases. The annual fee is $450.

You receive a 50% travel redemption bonus or you can transfer your points on a 1:1 basis to airlines and hotels including Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, Marriott Bonvoy, and World of Hyatt.

New Chase Sapphire Reserve cardmembers can earn a 50,000-points signup bonus worth $750 in award travel by spending $4,000 in the first 3 months. Before applying for the Sapphire Reserve, make sure you haven’t opened at least 5 new credit card accounts in the last 24 months.

Chase Sapphire Preferred

When you want access to the Ultimate Rewards 1:1 transfer partners but don’t need the Sapphire Reserve’s other travel benefits, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card can be a better fit. You can enjoy a 25% travel redemption booking travel on Chase or you might get more value by transferring your points to the 1:1 Chase travel partners.

It’s also possible to redeem your points for cash and gift cards rewards, though you won’t get a redemption bonus.

No love for the Amex Gold? 4X on restaurants and supermarkets, 3X on airfare, $100/year airline fee credit, $10/month credit at Grubhub/Seamless and a few others, and free roadside assistance.

Damn near tore a hole in my new wallet, too.
