Most Italians would never think of eating on the streets or steps, but tourists trying to cram as much sightseeing into a day as possible do it all the time. Now, with the passing of a new decree, those people will face fines ranging from 25 Euros ($32 USD) to 500 Euros ($650 USD) if they’re caught eating around Rome’s centuries-old monuments and archeological sites.
According to the CS Monitor, “In an attempt to bring a greater level of decorum to a city not known for order, Rome city council has passed a decree banning tourists from snacking in the historic center, which [is] recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.” That includes popular sites like the Pantheon and Piazza Navona.
