So you’re determined to get The Business Platinum Card® from American Express. The Amex Business Platinum card offers a plethora of travel benefits which makes this a perfect fit if you travel often. But before you try, see what it takes to qualify for the Amex Business Platinum and learn if you may be instantly approved.
How Hard is to Get Amex Business Platinum
Today can be one of the best times to apply for this benefit-packed card (check out the Amex Business Platinum Card review to learn more). It’s possible to earn up to 75,000 Membership Rewards points worth $750 in award travel.
Who Can Apply?
Any U.S. resident at least 18 years old with business income can apply for The Business Platinum Card® from American Express. Your company can be structured as a corporation, partnership, or sole proprietorship.
As required by federal law, you will need to apply using your EIN if you are a corporation or partnership. Sole proprietors can apply with their EIN or Social Security number.
The application process is similar to applying for any other business card. You will need to enter your business and personal details including annual income, contact information, and business industry and size.
In most cases, Amex provides a decision within 30 seconds of submitting your application. If your application flags for further review, you may need to show proof of income.
740 Credit Score
You will have the best approval odds for the Amex Business Platinum if you have a personal credit score of at least 740. As this is a premium card you will need an excellent credit score.
This is the same credit score needed for the personal Platinum Card from American Express. However, you can be approved with a score as low as 700. Your approval odds are better if you have a higher annual income or a current relationship with American Express.
Even though this is a business card, American Express still uses your personal credit score to reach an application decision. Also, missing monthly payments can negatively affect your credit score.
Tip: If you have a 670 credit score, consider getting the American Express Business Gold Card. You earn up to 4x points on purchases and get 25% of your points back when booking award flights on AmexTravel.com.
At Least 18 Years Old
American Express only requires you to be at least 18 years old to apply for the Business Platinum Card from American Express.
However, you must be at least 21 years old to enjoy the full benefits of this card. This is because the airport lounge partners may require you to be at least 21 to enter certain lounge locations.
Being a few years older also lets you establish a credit history, which increases your approval odds.
Amex Application Guidelines
A general guideline is to only apply for one Amex card every 5 days and 2 cards every 90 days.
However, the “once in a lifetime” welcome offer applies to the Business Platinum Card. You won’t qualify for the bonus offer if you have already earned it for this card. Also, American Express states they may consider your previous Amex card history and other factors to determine your welcome offer eligibility.
These terms don’t affect your approval odds, but you should make your best effort to apply if you qualify for the bonus offer.
Note that the annual fee is $595 (See Rates & Fees).
Get Another Card First?
If you have a limited card history, a credit score below 740, or both, you might consider getting another American Express card first.
This is only one of the best American Express business cards you can get. If you have another Amex business card first, it can let you prequalify for the Business Platinum Card.
For example, The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express doesn’t charge an annual fee (See Rates & Fees) and earns 2x Membership Rewards points on the first $50,000 spent annually on everyday business purchases (then 1x points).
Similarly, the American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card earns 2% cash back on all eligible purchases on up to $50,000 per calendar year, then 1%. It also doesn’t have an annual fee (See Rates & Fees). Learn more about the Amex Blue Business cards.
As a current American Express cardholder, it’s possible that Amex will do a soft credit pull. This is a penalty-free way to see if you qualify for the Business Platinum Card.
Amex Business Platinum Benefits
Are you still unsure if you’re a good candidate for the Amex Business Platinum?
Below are some of this card’s key benefits.
Up to 75,000 Bonus Points Welcome Offer
You can earn up to 75,000 bonus Membership Rewards points. The only catch is that you will need to spend at least $15,000 in the first 3 months. The full bonus amount is worth $750 in award flights booked on AmexTravel.com.
Earn Up To 5x Points on Each Purchase
You get unlimited 5 points per $1 on flights and prepaid hotels on AmexTravel.com. Purchases larger than $5,000 earn 1.5 points per $1 spent, up to one million bonus points annually. All remaining purchases earn 1 point per $1.
This card is one of the quickest ways to earn bonus points when booking flights.
35% Airline Redemption Bonus
Every point you redeem on AmexTravel for award flights is effectively worth 1.35 cents each. Every point is worth 1 cent each when booking the flight. You then get 35% of those points back for a second redemption, up to 500,000 points per year.
This bonus applies to any flight on the airline of your choice plus any business or first-class flight regardless of the airline.
1:1 Point Transfers
As is the case with some of the best Chase credit cards, the 1:1 point transfers are a better option when you can get more than 1.35 cents value from each point. This can be easy to do if you save your points for premium cabin flights.
Some of the best transfer partners include Emirates, Singapore Airlines, and British Airways. For domestic award flights, Delta is a leading 1:1 transfer partner.
Airport Lounge Access
You also get complimentary airport lounge access to several networks including the Centurion, Priority Pass, and Delta Sky Clubs. Plaza Premium, Airspace, Escape, and International American Express also belong to the Amex Global Lounge Collection.
$200 Airline Fee Credit
Amex reimburses the first $200 in incidental fees, like checked baggage fees, each year for your preferred qualifying airline. These come in the form of statement credits.
Upgraded Hotel Elite Status
You also get automatic Hilton Honors Gold status and Marriot Bonvoy Gold Elite status. These membership levels let you enjoy free on-property internet, get free breakfast, and earn more hotel points on paid stays.
Dell Small Business Credit
Another business perk you may appreciate is a Dell Small Business statement credit. To get the credit, cardholders must enroll to get up to $200 in annual Dell statement credits (cardholders get up to $100 semi-annually for U.S. Dell purchases – terms apply).
