Thanks to the UK government for reminding me that if you don’t keep your passport in good condition, you risk being denied entry or having to rush to get an emergency passport to leave a country.
For an example, see one of their recent tips for travel to the Netherlands: “Before you travel, make sure your passport is in good condition; the Netherlands authorities often impound damaged passports and some travelers have had to get an emergency travel document to leave the country.”
Fortunately this has never happened to me, but I have had friends who’ve mistakenly washed their passports and had to get new ones. Others have kept their passports in their back pockets and worn them out. Just another good reason to use a passport cover, preferably one with RFID-blocking technology that doesn’t say United States on it. Here’s a variety of covers from Amazon.
