Passports 720x360Thanks to the UK government for reminding me that if you don’t keep your passport in good condition, you risk being denied entry or having to rush to get an emergency passport to leave a country.

For an example, see one of their recent tips for travel to the Netherlands: “Before you travel, make sure your passport is in good condition; the Netherlands authorities often impound damaged passports and some travelers have had to get an emergency travel document to leave the country.”

Fortunately this has never happened to me, but I have had friends who’ve mistakenly washed their passports and had to get new ones. Others have kept their passports in their back pockets and worn them out. Just another good reason to use a passport cover, preferably one with RFID-blocking technology that doesn’t say United States on it. Here’s a variety of covers from Amazon.

Why do you recomend a cover withont the United States seal on it? Make one less conspicuous as an American?

Three years ago you made a comment about a passport cover and gave a site to get one.
I ordered two- one for my son and I. When we came back through customs the agent took the cover off and almost threw them at me. Told me I could NOT use them. What is the deal????

Agents don’t like the covers so you need to take your passport out before handing it to them. The covers are just good to protect it.
