“I generally turn on the TV (even if I’m not going to be watching it) while I make phone calls or have conversations I don’t want overheard.”

Agree with the TV to add background, but have also used the TV on to have a light on when U return to a room and can’t find light switches in a strange room. Also keep the TV on so folks aren’t sure if you are in or out of said room.
