Speak to a medical professional before taking medicationToday’s special Saturday tip is an important addendum to yesterday’s tip about stomach issues: As has been emphasized by a number of readers, cipro—as is the case with other antibiotics—should not be taken without the consult of a medical professional. As reader Daniel K. notes, “‘gastroenteritis’…is a catch-all term for all sorts of viral and bacterial infections related to gastro-intestinal symptoms. The cause of many outbreaks on cruises, for example, is the norovirus, for which antibiotics are definitely not going to be of any help at all. For the bacterial causes, including the sometimes fatal strains of E. coli, cipro may be of help, but it should be used only when recommended by a doctor or medical provider.”

In the end the tip is this: Bring a first aid kit, but only after speaking to a doctor. And better yet, speak to a doctor about what to bring before you travel—even if it’s only for general travel medical advice.

A simple remedy. Carry a bottle (NOT TABLETS) of PeptoBismol – Start at the onset of symptoms to see if it helps. If not, see a local doctor because he knows what kind of a bug(s) are prevalent in his community. They may have a concoction that will do the trick.
