Transfer your valuables away from the security lineEach Friday, we feature a reader-submitted tip as our Travel Tip of the Day. This week’s tip comes from reader Bill S., who builds on last week’s tip about leaving your valuables exposed in the security bin:

“I also do not trust the open security bin. Place all valuables in your carry-on/personal item before you get to security. Afterwards, if you want to carry them on your person, return them to your pockets after the security check. While some may find this unsavory, I make these transfers in the bathroom away from thieving eyes.”

Thank, Bill!

Also put your money belt in carry on until you get past security. I have worn one for years and have never been asked to remove it until 2015 in San Francisco. Of course it was the one and only time I was carrying a fair amount of cash on me. It was nerve wracking trying to keep my eyes on it.

Agreed! I always put my wallet/phone/passport into my carryon right before going through security. You never know who’s going to reach into the bin while you’re preoccupied.

Wow, I haven’t even thought about it! I guess I trust people, especially fellow travellers at the airport too much. Lesson learnt, I’ll keep that in mind in the future!

I always use my Scotty Vest whenever I travel. All my valuables (wallet, Passport, documents, cell phone, and items in my pants pocket all go into the zippered pockets of the vest. Nothing is ever exposed or forgotten in the open trays.
